Researching AI Voice Tools in Pediatric Speech Therapy Through Worlds of Hello.

Worlds of Hello is a research-driven platform examining how emotionally familiar AI voices and automated clinical documentation can close the gap between therapy sessions and daily life for children with speech-language disorders.

Caregivers who want to help at home but lack structured tools

Roughly 11 million children in the United States live with speech-language disorders. The therapists who serve them manage caseloads that make individualized follow-up nearly impossible. After a 30-minute session ends, children return to homes without structured practice tools, and the gains made in clinic erode before the next appointment.

Black children with developmental disabilities receive speech therapy referrals at lower rates than White and Hispanic peers. When minority children reach therapy, the tools available for home practice default to accent profiles that exclude their communities. A child who hears a voice that sounds nothing like their family treats the exercise as foreign, not familiar. Engagement drops.

Meanwhile, therapists lose hours each week to manual transcription and clinical documentation, time that could be spent in direct care. The average SLP spends one hour writing notes for every one hour of therapy delivered. Carry-over, the generalization of clinical gains to everyday communication, remains the field's most persistent challenge because no one has built the bridge between session and home.

OUR APPROACH

Familiar Voices, Reduced Burden, Research-Grounded Design

Worlds of Hello operates at the intersection of speech-language pathology, voice AI, and family-centered design. We build with, not for, clinicians, caregivers, and the communities whose children use these tools daily.

1

Emotionally Familiar Voice Technology

  • Caregivers clone their own voice in under 5 minutes through a guided segmented recording process

  • 170 community voices across 10+ accent categories (African-American, Nigerian, Brazilian, Cajun, US-Southern, and more) for families who prefer immediate access

  • Children's brains show distinct neural activation for familiar voices, mother's voice activates reward circuits, promoting safety learning and engagement with challenging tasks

2

Clinician-Centered Documentation

  • Audio upload with automatic transcription and speaker diarization reduces documentation time from 60 minutes to under 3 minutes

  • AI-generated SOAP notes from transcripts, editable and shareable

  • In-app therapist-family communication without exchanging personal phone numbers

3

Adaptive, Child-Safe Activity Design

  • Voice-guided activities with emotional modulation (encouragement, gentle redirection, neutral guidance)

  • Three-level adaptive scaffolding: no child experiences a terminal failure state

  • Name personalization throughout — children hear their own name from a voice they trust

  • Activities designed for ages 2-12, aligned with clinical speech-language goals

Community-Grounded Research

  • Tested with 19 caregiver-child pairs and 33 speech-language pathologists across multi-day and single-session studies

  • 75% of caregivers reported feeling culturally represented through the voice library

  • IRB-approved research protocol with consent-forward voice collection under zero-data-retention policy

I liked that the activities were fun and easy for my child. It would be better if he could interact more or get feedback while doing them.

The app would be a fantastic addition to my progress monitoring and session planning. I'm happy I got to check it out and will be also recommending it to other SLPs. The AI function makes life easier by summarizing our notes and keeping everything organized.
